20 years later! Michael recalls cheeky line that won Catherine’s heart

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones tied the knot in 2000.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, November 18, and to mark the special occasion the Hollywood actor posted a beautiful tribute to Catherine as he shared a sweet audio clip of how they first met.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Michael penned: “Happy 20th Anniversary my darling! I love you always and forever @catherinezetajones.”

In the clip, the actor opened up about the first time he laid eyes on Catherine. He said: “I’m at a screening in Hollywood, somebody’s house and they’re showing Zorro. And I’m watching this movie and I go ‘wow, who is this girl, she is incredible’.”

Michael said a month later he was at the Deauville Film Festival in France promoting A Perfect Murder with Gwyneth Paltrow when he realised the cast of The Mask of Zorro would be attending. So he asked his assistant to find out if Catherine would be attending, if she was alone and if she wanted to grab a drink.

“I had a drink with her, and then she invited me to dinner with the company and I’m thinking ‘this is looking good, this is good’,” he said, revealing after dinner he invited her for a nightcap back at the bar, and sure enough she made an appearance. But Michael said it was here that he almost ruined his chances.

“I kinda made a big mistake… I looked at her and said ‘I just want to tell you, I’m going to be the father of your children’ and she looked at me and said, ‘I’ve heard a lot about you, I guess it’s all true, good night’.

“She left early the next morning and I thought I had completely blown it, [but] I’m happy to say we made contact and the rest is history.”

What an amazing magical night that was! And 7304.85 days and nights on, I love you now as I did then. Thank you for the love and laughter.”

Many fans were quick to wish the couple a happy anniversary, with one writing: “I absolutely love this! Happy anniversary to the both of you.” Another added: “So much love to you both. Happy Anniversary!!” While a third wrote: “Wishing you a wonderful 20 Anniversary!”
