M*A*S*H star Sally Kellerman dies, age 84

Well-known American actress and singer Sally Kellerman passed away on Thursday, February 24, age 84 in an assisted care facility in Woodland Hills, California.

The late actress’s publicist confirmed her death, revealing she’d been suffering from dementia for the past five years.

In a statement to TMZ, Kellerman’s son, Jack Krane, revealed that his mother hadn’t been in the best health in recent years.

The popular M*A*S*H actress is known for her supporting role as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the 1970 M*A*S*H feature film based on Richard Hooker’s 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. 

Kellerman’s performance in the film saw her nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a supporting role. The actress has also played in a number of other television series and films, including her roles as Elaine in Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Ann in Welcome to L.A., Kay in A Little Romance, Hazel in big Blonde, Dr Diane Turner in Back to School and Mama Queen in September Gun. She also starred in the popular TV series The Twilight Zone and in a pilot episode of TV series Star Trek, amongst many other acting roles.

Her most famous voiceover roles include her work in as Miss Finch in the 1985 comedy film Sesame Street Presents: Follow that Bird as well as her work in ABC animation series Dinosaurs and FX’s animated adult sitcom series Unsupervised. The actress is also well-known for her distinct, seductively velvety voice which worked in her favour when being cast for a number of film, series, and voiceover roles, as well as the production of two music albums.

Kellerman’s first music album Roll with the Feelin’ was recorded in 1972 after she signed a record contract with Verve Records 17 years earlier in 1955. Her second album, Sally, was released in 2009. The late actress and musician featured in a number of songs across various other albums and performed commercial voiceover work for multiple note-worthy brands including Mercedez-Benz, Revlon, and Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing.

The actress has been married twice previously, first to writer and director Rick Edelstein between 1970-1972 and then to movie producer Jonathon D. Krane between 1980-2016. The actress has three children, twins Hannah and Jack Krane and Claire Kellerman.
