Beloved television host Larry Emdur was left stunned by Sunrise host David Koch’s bombshell retirement announcement, admitting that he spat out his coffee upon hearing the news.

Koch, who is the longest-serving breakfast host in Australian television history, surprised Sunrise viewers when he announced the news of his retirement live on air on Monday, May 29.

“I have loved every single minute of my time at Sunrise, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved over the last 21 years,” Koch told viewers.

“I’ve been privileged to experience so many adventures, to meet so many incredible people and to cover so many moments of history in the making. It really is the world’s best job.

“What I’ll miss most is working with the amazing Sunrise team, especially Nat [Natalie Barr], Beretts [Mark Beretta] and Dave Walters who have been with me for virtually the entire time on the show. I reckon I’ve spent more time with them than my family and it has been an utter joy. I’ll miss the Sunrise viewers who have energised me every single day.

“Coming up to 20 consecutive years as Australia’s most-watched breakfast show is a nice moment to exit stage left with an enormous sense of pride and gratitude. Thank you for the privilege.”

Emdur joined the sea of viewers across the country left stunned by Koch’s announcement, taking to social media to convey his surprise and wish his colleague all the best.

“Noooooo!!!!!! I just spat my coffee out,” Emdur wrote.

“He’s one of the greatest gentlemen in the biz, he has had such a massive impact on morning television.

“An industry hero and a great mate. Calm seas and fair winds ahead mate, enjoy the next chapter. You bloody legend !!”

Fans were quick to praise Emdur for his kind words with one fan suggesting Emdur himself take up Koch’s mantle as host of Sunrise.

“Well said Larry,” one fan wrote.

“Good luck Koch’s, enjoyed watching over the years.”

“Kochie and Larry. The best in the biz!!!”

“Bring on Larry for Sunrise,” another suggested.

Koch will host his final episode of Sunrise on Friday, June 9, and although there are those who would love to see Emdur take over as host, a number of names have emerged as frontrunners to take on the role.

Former Ten personality Dr Chris Brown, who recently signed with Seven, has been tipped to take up hosting duties as has the network’s sports presenter Matt Shirvingtion.

Another name reportedly in the running for the position is journalist Matt Doran, who is currently co-hosting Weekend Sunrise.

Koch’s replacement has reportedly been decided by Seven with an announcement to be made on Monday, June 5.
