Trailblazing Australian singer Helen Reddy has passed away at the age of 78, her family has confirmed. Reddy’s daughters Traci and Jordan shared a statement on their mother’s official Facebook page on Wednesday morning.

The iconic singer, who was born in Melbourne in 1941, died on Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles. According to 9News, the singer had been living in a care home for retired Hollywood stars and was living with dementia.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Helen Reddy, on the afternoon of September 29th 2020 in Los Angeles,” they wrote. “She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and a truly formidable woman.

“Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever.”

Best known for her 1971 feminist anthem ‘I Am Woman’, Reddy’s life was recently made into a movie of the same name. In 1973 she became the first Australian to win a Grammy and, when accepting her award, famously thanked God on stage, saying “she makes everything possible”.
