Fans across the globe have come together to rally behind the Lord of the Dance’s Michael Flatley after he revealed he was fighting an “aggressive” form of cancer.

The devastating news was shared in a statement posted to the 64-year-old’s Instagram page on Wednesday, January 11.

According to the release, Flatley had already undergone surgery for the unspecified cancer and is currently being cared for by doctors while recovering in hospital.

“Dear friends, we have something personal to share, Michael Flatley has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer,” the statement on Flatley’s page reads.

“He has undergone surgery and is in the care of an excellent team of doctors. No further comments will be made at this time. We ask only for your prayers and well wishes. Thank you. Teamlord.”

While no update regarding Flatley’s condition has been made, dedicated fans have flooded the comment section of his Instagram page expressing their concern for the Riverdance star while reflecting on the impact he has had on their lives.

You literally taught my kid to walk at 10 months because she wanted to dance like you,” one fan wrote.

“Because of Riverdance my mom signed me up for Irish dance classes, and I spent 15 years dedicating my heart and soul to this beautiful dance form. I literally do not know who I would be without his influence. Sending prayers, love, and strength,” commented another.

“Michael is a personal hero – I remember the moment I first saw him dance, and love re-watching thanks to YouTube. He lifts my soul. I would feel a poorer man if I had not seen him dance and can’t say how much that means to me. He’s a rockstar. Sending him all my love for a speedy recovery. Xxx,” wrote a third.

Other fans have also taken to Twitter to share their well wishes for their idol.

This isn’t the first time Flatley has dealt with cancer, back in 2003 the star was diagnosed with skin cancer.

“It was purely by chance that it was noticed,” said in a 2021 interview with the Sunday Independentadding that the melanoma was removed and had left no side effects.

Flatley become a global sensation for his impressive Irish dance shows such as RiverdanceLord of the DanceFeet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger Live.

Throughout the course of his entertainment career, Flatley has performed for more than 60 million people in 60 countries, with his shows grossing more than $1 billion.
