Australian tennis star Sam Stosur welcomes beautiful baby girl

Aussie tennis champion Sam Stosur has welcomed her first child, after her partner Liz Astling gave birth to a baby girl last month.

The former world number one shared the exciting news via Instagram on Monday night revealing she and Liz welcomed baby Genevieve into the world on June 16. She shared the news alongside a sweet image of the pair cradling their baby girl.

“Life in lockdown during coronavirus has been challenging in many ways but personally it’s been one of the most exciting and happy times of my life,” the tennis star wrote. “On the 16th of June, my partner Liz gave birth to our beautiful little girl, Genevieve. It has been a whirlwind time but we could not imagine life without her now.

“Mum and Evie are doing well and it’s so amazing to be home with them both. We are absolutely in love with this little bundle and rolling with the happy chaos. We can’t wait for what’s to come and to watch little Evie grow up…Although not too quickly we hope!”

Fans were quick to congratulate the couple on their new arrival, with one person writing: “My favorite player, Sammy is a Mom!!! Oh my goodness!! Absolutely thrilled for you two.”

Another added: “Congratulations to you both! What fabulous news. Enjoy those precious first few months with her.” And a third wrote: “Congratulations. Welcome to the exciting journey of motherhood.”

Meanwhile, Tennis Australia also congratulated the happy couple, commenting: “Congratulations Sam and Liz on the safe arrival of beautiful Evie, with love from the tennis family.” While the Australian Open’s official Instagram account wrote: “Major congrats! Welcome to the world, Genevieve.”

Sam won the US Open in 2011 and has six grand slam titles to her name. The 36-year-old, who still plays professionally, has won three doubles major titles, including last year’s Australian Open that she won in partnership with China’s Zhang Shuai, and has been ranked number one in doubles.
