McHale’s Navy and Partridge Family star Arte Johnson dies aged 90

“Funny man” Arte Johnson, who was made famous thanks to starring roles in several hit comedies throughout the 1960s, has died at the age of 90.

The talented actor passed away from heart failure after a long battle with bladder and prostate cancer on Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Arte appeared on numerous television shows throughout his long career with some of his most memorable roles being in the Partridge Family, McHale’s Navy, Love Boat and Laugh-In.

His humorous personality and portrayal of several characters captured the attention of audience’s across the globe with perhaps his most remembered role in Laugh-In where he played the character of Wolfgang – a former German storm trooper.

His catch-phrases “very interesting” and “very interesting… but stupid” are among his most famed lines with the star even receiving an Emmy in 1969 for his performance in the program.

Arte’s other popular television appearances during the 1960s and ’70s included Bewitched, Lost in Space and The Donna Reed Show.  While he also guested on Murder She Wrote and General Hospital.

Since news of his passing was announced messages of love and condolence from fans have spread across the internet as they remember the great actor and his comedic talent.

“So funny and talented,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Enjoyed every character he created. R.I.P.”

“R.I.P funny man, thank you for the great entertainment over the years,” another added.

While a third said: “He was so talented and such a kind man. He will be missed.”

Arte is survived by his wife Gisela and his twin brother Coslogh Johnson who was a television writer for Laugh-In.
