On Mother’s Day we talk a lot about celebrating mothers and motherhood.
But the sad reality is there are many women who don’t get the opportunity to experience motherhood for themselves.
Among them is British prime minister Theresa May, and she opened up about in in a radio interview this week.
When questioned by Radio LBC about whether she’d be different if she had been a mother, the 60-year-old PM shared her story.
“I think it’s impossible to answer the question about how I would have been had I done,” she said.
“It’s been very sad, it just turned out not to be possible for us.
“Of course, we’re not the only couple that finds themselves in that situation and when you do I suppose you just get on with life.”
It turns out May hasn’t had the easiest of lives.
Aside from not being able to have children, she was also an only child and at age 25 she lost both her parents in a short space of time.
Her father died in a car crash and a few months later her mum, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, also died.
She told Radio LBC she was lucky she was married beforehand because her husband Phillip was her “rock”.
May also revealed her faith was a big help to her through the tough times.
“It’s difficult to explain in simple words but actually the faith was there and did provide support for me through those difficult times,” she said.
