Rock fans around the world are mourning the death of Tommy DeCarlo, the longtime lead singer of Boston, who has died aged 60 after a battle with brain cancer.

DeCarlo’s family confirmed his passing in a statement shared on Facebook on Monday.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026,” the message from his wife Annie and children Talia and Tommy Jr. read.

“After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end.”

The singer had been diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2025 after suffering a sudden brain bleed that required emergency surgery. Doctors discovered two melanoma tumours in his brain and another spot on his lung during the procedure.

Despite undergoing treatment and months of recovery, DeCarlo later suffered another brain bleed and spent a month in hospital late last year before returning home to continue rehabilitation.

In the months leading up to his death, his family had set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical costs. The fundraiser raised more than $US56,000 as fans rallied around the musician during his illness.

From fan to frontman

DeCarlo’s journey to international rock stardom was an unlikely one.

A lifelong fan of Boston, he first gained attention after recording himself singing the band’s songs and posting the videos online following the death of the group’s original singer Brad Delp in 2007.

Boston’s founder Tom Scholz saw the videos and invited DeCarlo to audition – a moment that transformed his life.

At the time, DeCarlo was working at a Home Depot store in North Carolina. Soon after, he found himself touring the world as the new voice of the legendary rock band.

He went on to perform many of the group’s classic hits, including More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, Don’t Look Back and Amanda, helping keep the band’s music alive for a new generation of fans.

In 2021 he also released an audiobook memoir, Unlikely Rockstar — The Tommy DeCarlo Story, reflecting on his remarkable journey from devoted fan to the frontman of one of rock’s most famous bands.

His family has asked for privacy as they grieve.

“During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we support one another,” their statement said.

For many fans, DeCarlo’s story — from posting cover songs online to leading a legendary rock band — will remain one of the most unlikely success stories in music.
