Christmas wreath recall: Big W tells customers to return popular decoration

Christmas is just around the corner, but Big W shoppers will have to go without a popular Christmas decoration this year after the retailer recalled the item over concerns it could catch fire.

Big W pulled its Christmas wreath candle holder from shelves this week and urged customers to stop using it immediately. There are concerns the wreath surrounding the candle holder could catch fire, causing property damage, serious injury or death.

The recalled item was sold at Big W stores nationally and online between September 18 to November 7, 2018, and came in two styles: pink and gold, and green and silver. Big W advised the faulty products have an article number, located at the back of the box, corresponding with 689023 and 689054.

“Big W takes product safety seriously,” the company said in a statement. “Big W apologises to its customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall.”

The retailer has advised customers to immediately stop using the candle holder and return it to the nearest store for a full refund.

It comes after Target pulled two popular Christmas gifts from shelves in October. The retailer recalled its men’s Piping Hot ‘wave thongs’ and popular Slimline Activity and Sleep Tracker from shelves and urged customers to return the goods, which both pose potentially serious health risks.

Target said an issue with the insulation in the activity and sleep tracker could cause skin irritation or burns to wearers. The trackers were sold nationally between July 1, to September 18, 2018, and come in pink, blue and black colours.

“A potential lack of insulation from charging contacts may result in electrolytic action on the wearer’s skin surface,” the retailer said. “Consumers should stop using the product and return it to any Target store for a full refund.”

Target has also recalled a popular line of men’s thongs, citing issues with the thong sole surface that may present a slip hazard. It’s of particular concern leading up to the summer months when many Australians spend their days in the comfortable footwear.

The thongs were sold nation-wide between November 13, 2017 to September 18, 2018. They come in two styles, navy/orange and black/blue, and range between sizes 6-13.

Target did not elaborate on how the men’s thongs made it through their product standards test.
