We saw the world change a little bit more yesterday. And frankly, I think it is your fault it is all changing this rapidly.
If you missed it, Australia Post announced that 900 staff will go this year as it adjusts to a world with fewer letters in it. Channel 10 and Channel 7 both announced a whole raft of redundancies and changes to their programming and news lineups as the changing TV and news media environment takes a firmer hold on them. Sad indeed, but not surprising really considering the way we are all doing things is changing, perhaps more rapidly than anyone anticipated.
The last and only time I posted a letter last quarter was when I sent my BAS to the Tax Office. I haven’t sent any others, and the only ones I receive are bills and statements I haven’t yet signed up to receive online.
And as for watching TV with ads on it… Well, I am a prolific fast-forwarder. I tape all my favourite shows (only one of which is on Channel 10) then I watch them back at my own convenience, without the ads. And I consume all my news online, on digital media. Do you? No wonder mail and TV news is struggling!
But are you ready for it? Chances are, the people that hang out here in Start at 60, on Facebook, enjoying their daily diet of social media conversations are. Possibly, you’re more ready for it than they are, the people being made redundant who have held on in a traditional media environment this long. In fact, I suspect you are part of the reason these businesses and their staff are having to change.
Over 60s have long been thought of as “not being online”. In fact, even the Human Rights Commissioner for Ageing said this to me when I started this website a year ago. But you have proven the world wrong. You are online, consuming digital media keenly, using email and the world is changing accordingly.
And so today I ask you… When did you last send a letter to someone?
And when did you last watch Channel 10 early morning or late night News? Where do you get your news? Is it online or on the TV?
Do you fast forward through TV ads?
Do you feel like you are one of the reasons the world is changing?
