This $3 butter has just been ranked the best in Australia

It’s fair to say butter is a staple in most households. Nothing beats a spread of butter slathered on warm, fresh scones or morning toast. But with so many options now available, which butter brand is best?

To find out, consumer advocacy group Canstar Blue put well-known supermarket brands like Mainland, Western Star and Devondale under the spotlight to find the best tasting butter on the market. The brands were rated on their taste, texture, value for money, packaging and ease of spreading.

Aldi’s Beautifully Butterfully placed number one for the fifth year in a row, nabbing the only five-star rating for overall satisfaction. It also earned full marks for value for money and packaging, and four stars for taste, texture and spreading. Prices for Beautifully Butterfully start from $3.25 for 500g.

In second place, Mainland earned five stars in the taste, texture and ease of spreading categories, but finished on four stars for overall satisfaction and packaging. It got three stars for value for money. A Mainland tub will set you back $6 for 375g.

Another worthy contender is Western Star, which came in at third place and earned four stars for taste, texture, packaging, ease of spreading and overall satisfaction, but fell short in the value for money category where it received three stars. Prices for Western Star start at $4 for 250g.

It was followed by Devondale, which scored four stars in most categories, including taste, texture, packaging, ease of spreading and overall satisfaction, but finished on three stars for value for money. A tub of Devondale butter costs on average $2.30 for 250g.

Lurpak came in at fifth place, earning four stars in the taste, texture, packaging, ease of spreading and overall satisfaction categories but finished on threes stars for value for money. Prices for Lurpak butter start from $5 for 250g.

Woolworths Essentials (the supermarket’s low price range of everyday goods) also made the top nine, scoring four stars for texture, value for money and overall satisfaction. It fell short in the remaining categories where it received three stars. Prices for Woolies butter start at $5 for 500g. Coles’ own brand of butter received satisfactory four stars for overall satisfaction and value for money but finished with three stars in the remaining categories. Prices for Coles butter start at $2.80 for 500g.

It was followed by Bertolli, which scored four stars for ease of spreading and overall satisfaction, but finished on three stars everywhere else. A tub of Bertolli butter costs on average $4.50 for 400g.  Allowrie rounded out the results, landing three stars across all categories. Prices for Allowrie butter start at $4.50 for 250g.
