Beloved Sons and Daughters star Leila Hayes dies, age 85

Beloved actress, Leila Hayes, who became a household name for her noteworthy appearances on popular Australian drama series Sons and Daughters and Prisoner has passed away at the age of 85.

The Leila Hayes Drama Studio, which she founded, announced her passing after “an extended period of health challenges.”

“Leila Marion Hayes, one of Australia’s most beloved television personalities and Penguin Award-winning actress, has passed away at the age of 85. Known for her iconic portrayal of Beryl Palmer in “Sons and Daughters,” Hayes leaves behind a rich legacy spanning television, radio, theatre, and education,” they wrote.

“Following an extended period of health challenges, Hayes passed peacefully at Northern Beaches Hospital. In her final days, she celebrated her birthday surrounded by family and was lovingly attended by her only daughter Melissa throughout her last week.

“In her final years, Hayes found joy away from the public eye, spending time with her grandsons, Lucian and Liam, and pursuing her creative passion through writing, publishing a children’s book titled “Streak,” inspired by her walks at Balmoral Beach near her Sydney home and proudly dedicated to her grandsons.

“The family sends their love to all of Leila’s friends and fans, and asks their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

Born in Victoria on January 12, 1940, Hayes began her career as a singer before transitioning to acting in the early 1970s with guest roles in drama series such as HomicideDivision 4Matlock PoliceBlueyCop Shop, and The Sullivans.

In 1981 she appeared in several episodes of Prisoner as brothel madam Jeannie Baxter and also featured in an early episode of A Country Practice.

Her most memorable role came as Beryl Palmer in the 1980s soap opera Sons and Daughters, appearing throughout the show’s entire run.

Hayes also found success on stage, taking the lead role of April Delaney in the comedy Dimboola.

After retiring from acting in 1992, Hayes stepped away from the public eye, focusing on teaching at her acting school, the Leila Hayes Drama Studio.

“She was my favorite on sons and daughter. Condolences to her daughter melissa and her family,” commented another.

“Leila Hayes was a wonderful talented actress her role as Beryl Palmer was one of my favourites. My Condolences to Leila’s family and friends. RIP Leila Hayes.”

Hayes is survived by her daughter Melissa and grandsons Lucian and Liam.
