Australian actor and former James Bond star George Lazenby has surprised fans after announcing his retirement from acting.

The 84-year-old star took to social media on Thursday, July 25, to reveal that although it has been a “fun ride”, the years have taken their toll.

“This hasn’t been an easy decision but it’s time to announce my retirement from work,” he began.

“Therefore, I won’t be doing any more acting or making public appearances, doing any more interviews or signing any more autographs as of today. It’s been a fun ride but getting older is no fun.

“I can now concentrate on spending more time with my family. My sincere gratitude to everyone out there for your love and support over the years. It has meant a lot to me. George xx.”

Fans eagerly extended their well wishes to Lazenby as he begins this new chapter in his life, with many expressing their gratitude for years of entertainment.

“There comes a time when you realize you must spend the time left with family and yourself. Take care George and live the best life you can with no strings attached,” one wrote.

“Thank you, good sir. We’ll keep the lamppost lit for you.”

“Family comes first! You’re an absolute legend, George. Thanks for being Bond,” commented another.

“Forever our Aussie Bond, all the best George.”

Lazenby’s professional career began with modelling commercial work before he was cast to replace original James Bond actor, Sean Connery for the 1969 film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Lazenby was the second actor to portray the fictional British secret agent.

While he did not return to the Bond franchise, Lazenby found success with roles in Universal Soldier (1971), Who Saw Her Die? (1972), The Shrine of Ultimate Bliss (1974), The Man from Hong Kong (1975), and The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977).

He also enjoyed success with small screen roles in General Hospital and Rituals before playing Mario in the television adaptations of the Emmanuelle book series.

After a career lull in the late 1970s, Lazenby moved into business and invested in real estate.

Lazenby later appeared in roles that parodied his James Bond role. In 2017, a Hulu docudrama film, Becoming Bond, featured Lazenby discussing his life story and his time as Bond.

Lazenby’s final screen appearances will come in the upcoming films Mundije and Z Dead End.
