Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, it’s unlikely you have avoided the hype around budget supermarket Aldi, particularly in relation to its Special Buys offering.
With its low prices and various special offers, Aldi has developed somewhat of a cult following and shoppers regularly rave about their best bargain finds online – in fact a number of dedicated social media pages have been created to allow shoppers to exchange tips.
Now though, devoted Aldi shoppers have had their say on the supermarket’s best products as part of Aldi’s ‘People’s Picks’ awards – and Australian-made produce came out on top. And if you want to pick up the winning products yourself, all you have to do is look out for the blue People’s Picks logo next time you’re in store.
While the products weren’t ranked from one to 10, they did cover a range of food types. Cheese lovers voted the store’s Emporium Selection Brie or Camembert Cheese – which comes in at $4.49 for 200g – as a must-buy item. “Deliciously creamy and full of flavour, with a hint of European indulgence but made in Australia,” one shopper said.
Australian made Beautifully Butterfully Salted Butter also made it into the top 10, with shoppers describing the $2.79 product as a “regular on their shopping list” thanks to its great flavour.
When it comes to baked goods, it appears shoppers can’t get enough of Bakers Life Wholegrain Wraps. An eight-pack costs just $1.89 and one shopper revealed they use them not only for wraps, but also to make lighter pizzas. While Baker’s Life Croissants are also a firm favourite among shoppers, with one describing the Aussie-made products (3pk, $2.19) as “night, light and fluffy”.
No meat products made it onto the list, but fish lovers might want to pick up a four-pack of The Fishmonger Fresh Salmon Fillets for $11.99 next time they’re in store. Or if snacks are your thing, why not try Forresters Natural Almonds ($9.99 for 750g) or Blackstone Vegetable Straws. A 110g bag will set you back just $2.29. And there’s good news for those with a sweet tooth too as shoppers heralded the supermarket’s 12 pack of Monarc Utopia Mini Variety Ice Cream, costing $4.99.
Only one cleaning product made it onto the list this year, and it’s hardly surprising that it was the Di-San Oxy Action Pre Wash Stain Remover for $1.29, as many shoppers have raved about this product on social media. And the final item on this year’s list was Essential Health Paw Paw Ointment for $2.79. One shopper raved about the ointment, saying: “Great product, good fragrance…and it works. Oh, and it’s Aussie made, too!”
Today’s list comes after Aldi beat out Coles and Woolies in the battle of the house brands, according to Choice testing. Last month, Choice revealed that the supermarket’s products were preferred by shoppers, over the house products offered by Coles and Woolworths in six out of 10 categories, from premium ice cream to tomato sauce.
