Ahh, spring cleaning! That refreshing season when we trade the winter covers for lighter ones, declutter our homes, dust surfaces, and the deep cleaning list truly goes on.

When it comes to spring cleaning, most of us tend to focus on the house and yard tasks, but after slogging it through the majority of the year, our cars deserve some TLC too.

Driving through rain or shine, open roads and inner city weaving, neglecting to clean your trusty car is like forgetting about an old friend in need.

So, when you’re giving your vehicle some love this season, here are five tasks often overlooked that will have your old friend feeling refreshed and revitalised.

1. Aircon vents

When was the last time you cleaned your car’s aircon ducts?

While changing the filter is reserved for your mechanic during service time, the dust and debris that settles on your air ducts is an easy task for your car’s spring cleaning checklist.

Using a small, soft brush, dislodge the dust and vacuum it up. You can also use compressed air to help blow out any remaining particles and help maintain the air quality inside your vehicle.

2. Seatbelts

Our cars can last us years if not decades, especially when properly cared for. But over the years, we often forget to clean one of the most integral parts of the car – the seatbelt.

Putting our seatbelt on is one of the first things we do when we get in the car, and being that it sits in contact with us the whole time we’re driving, sometimes catching spills and holding the oils from our skin, our seatbelts can be pretty dirty.

Not only is this build-up of dirt and grime gross to think about, but it can also cause your seatbelt to jamb over time.

To continue working effectively and keeping you safe on the road, wipe down the seatbelt fabric and clean the retracting mechanism with a dampened cloth and mild cleaner.

3. Door hinges

There’s nothing quite as annoying as a creaky old car door that often jambs, leaving you wrestling with the handle just to get inside.

Your car doors can collect dirt, road salt, and moisture, causing the hinges to deteriorate and corrode over time.

Keep on top of your car’s door hinge health by cleaning these areas with a mixture of mild soap and water, followed by a silicone-based lubricant to prevent rust and ensure your car doors continue to operate smoothly

4. Cupholders and side door pockets

Your cupholders and side door pockets are compartments that often become cluttered with old receipts, wrappers, and other rubbish.

Clean everything out, give them a good vacuum and wipe down the surfaces.

If you want to keep these areas clean, consider buying small rubbish bags to store in the pockets, making it easier to throw the rubbish in your out at the end of each week.

5. Wiper blades

Wiper blades are such a crucial part of safe driving, working to make sure you can see out of your windshield clearly, so it’s important to look after them.

Copping the most out of the outside elements, you can clean your wiper blades with a soft cloth or paper towel soaked in windshield washer fluid or mild soapy water, eliminating the buildup of dirt debris that often gets stuck in them and results in damaged blades.

If you’ve noticed that your wiper blades just aren’t quite leaving your windshield as clear as you’d like, tracking marks across the windshield, then it might be time to replace them.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to leave this task to your mechanic, often resulting in an expensive replacement, you can easily switch your wiper blades out yourself – and for a much cheaper price.
