One of the worst feelings in the world is dropping glass in your home. But that’s nothing next to the pain of stepping in it!

Thankfully, there’s a home remedy for glass splinter removal that many Starts at 60 readers swear by. All you need is some baking soda and a little water.

Before we begin: please seek medical attention if the glass is very painful or deeply embedded. And be sure to work through these Mayo Clinic guidelines before attempting any home remedies:

  • Wash your hands, as well as the affected area, with soap and water to avoid infection.
  • Sterilise a pair of clean tweezers with rubbing alcohol and gently try to remove the foreign object.
  • If the object is beneath the surface under the skin, use a clean, sharp needle (also sterilised with rubbing alcohol) to gently break the surface immediately over the object. Then retry with the tweezers.
  • Wash the area again and pat try.

If you’re still having trouble with a stubborn glass splinter, you may wish to get out the baking soda and try this hack:

  1. Work the baking soda and water into a paste.
  2. Apply the paste to the wound gently.
  3. Place a bandage or bandaid on the affected area and keep it on until the next day.

By the following day, the glass should be sticking out of the skin and easier to remove.

For those of you who work with wood or have wooden furniture, this method also works well for splinters.
