When it comes to kitchen appliances, there’s no longer a limited selection to choose from. In recent months, the likes of air fryers and pie makers have soared in popularity, and now Kmart’s $29 sausage roll maker is taking a turn in the spotlight.

The handy kitchen appliance makes it super easy to whip up traditional meat sausage rolls at home, or a range of veggie varieties for those who don’t eat meat, or try to limit their intake. Now though, a simple recipe for a delicious-looking dessert roll has captured the internet’s attention.

MasterChef Australia star Khahn Ong shared the simple recipe via Kmart as part of the discount retailer’s online masterclass series, which has focused on everything from cooking to decorating and dining during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. And we guarantee you’ll want to give it a try!

Here’s how to make it. And don’t worry if you don’t have a sausage roll maker, you can still make these dessert treats, simply follow the recipe to make the mixture and then cook in the oven instead. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 3 x Granny smith apples
  • 50g butter (diced)
  • 80g icing sugar
  • 50ml of brandy (optional)
  • 3 x cloves
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger powder
  • 1 x egg
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (defrosted)

Recipe

  1. Core, peel and cut the Granny Smith apples into eighths. Then halve the pieces again.
  2. Melt butter in a large pan and add three cloves, over a medium heat. Once the butter begins to bubble, add the apples and cook for two minutes until they start to soften.
  3. Once the apples have started to go soft, sift and add 80g of icing sugar into the pan. Cook for five minutes until the fruit begins to caramelise. If you’re adding the alcohol, carefully add the brandy. Then add the ground ginger and cinnamon.
  4. While the mixture cooks, get a clean bowl and crack an egg to make an egg wash.
  5. Remove the cooked apple mixture from the heat and remove the clove pieces.
  6. Now place one sheet of puff pastry into the Kmart sausage roll maker, and spoon 3 tbsp of mixture into each pocket. Then fold the pastry sheet in half over the top to enclose. Coat with the egg wash and close the machine.
  7. Turn on the sausage roll maker and cook for around 15-20, until the pastry is golden. Now serve with ice cream, whipped cream or even custard – and enjoy!
