You are what you eat, it’s true. Experts confirm that our health does begin in the gut.

Dietician Boris Kazakov says, “Maintaining a healthy gut is important as a means of helping reduce the risk of a range of conditions from bowel cancer and diverticular disease through to indigestion and constipation, and given that poor digestive health can affect anyone, it’s important to look after your gut.”

The human gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all the human cells in the entire body.

These bacteria promote normal gastrointestinal function, protect us from infection, regulate metabolism, and comprise more than 75 percent of our immune system. That is hard work.

The most common causes of a poorly functioning gut include a sedentary lifestyle, stress overload and not surprising – a poor diet.

How to help the good gut bacteria thrive? Easy! Eat and drink a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Ingredients

1 pineapple (including core)
3 pears
1 cucumber
Thumb-length of ginger
Handful of mint leaves

Preparation

Put all the ingredients through a juicer and enjoy!

What’s so special about these ingredients?

Pineapple contains bromelain, a group of protein-digesting enzymes, which help with digestion in the intestinal tract. Bromelain is found at the core of the pineapple.

Pears stimulate secretion of digestive juices so food moves more easily through our system which helps regulate bowel movements, prevent water retention, and decrease bloating.  Pear fiber also helps it bind to and flush toxins out of the colon.

Cucumbers are rich in water and fibre, two of the most basic elements needed for healthy digestion. This combination is very effective in aiding digestion as it helps get rid of toxins from the digestive system.

Ginger is used to help with digestion and increases saliva and other digestive fluids, which alleviates indigestion and other symptoms like flatulence and bloating.

Mint soothes the stomach in cases of indigestion or inflammation. Mint’s aroma stimulates the salivary glands, as well as glands that secrete digestive enzymes.
