Tech tips without the jargon: Handy digital shortcuts for everyday life

Let’s be honest — sometimes it feels like the younger generation was born knowing how to use all this tech. But that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t keep up. In fact, with a few easy tricks, your phone or tablet can make everyday life a lot smoother (and a bit more fun too).

Here are some simple, no-jargon tips to help you get more from your device — whether it’s staying in touch, organising your day, or just making things easier.

1. “Hey Siri” and “OK Google” Can Do More Than You Think

Your phone’s voice assistant is like having a tiny helper in your pocket. You can ask for a bunch of things, from the weather to a quick fun riddle. Here’s a quick list of a few things you can ask:

  • “What’s the weather today?”
  • “Set a timer for 10 minutes.”
  • “Remind me to take my pills at 7pm.”
  • “Call Margaret.”
  • “Give me a riddle.”
  • “Tell me a joke.”
  • “What’s 1 plus 1?”

No typing, no fuss — just speak and let it do the rest.

2. Make Text Bigger (and Easier to Read)

Tired of squinting? You can increase the size of the text on your phone or tablet:

  • On iPhone: Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size.
  • On Android: Go to Settings > Display > Font Size.

You can also turn on “Bold Text” or “High Contrast” for easier viewing.

3. Scan QR Codes Without Downloading an App

These little black-and-white squares pop up at restaurants, shops, and even doctor’s offices. Here’s the trick: Just open your phone’s camera and point it at the QR code.

A link will pop up — tap it, and you’re in. No special app needed!

4. Use Your Phone as a Magnifying Glass

Don’t strain your eyes on that menu or distant street sign — if you’re struggling to see something, your phone camera can act as a magnifying glass! Simply open the app and zoom in and out as necessary.

5. Take a Screenshot to Save Information

Need to save directions, a recipe, or a booking confirmation?

  • On iPhone: Press the Power and Volume Up buttons together.

  • On Android: Press the Power and Volume Down buttons together.

The image is saved in your Photos — no need to write things down.
