After admitting last week that he didn’t know or care if his only child, Abigail, has made him a grandfather, Sir Anthony Hopkins has defended his comments.
Speaking to The Times, he insisted that his remarks weren’t cold but rather he’s learned to live with daughter’s decision to not be a part of his life.
“No, I wasn’t cold. I’m not cold. Her choice is her choice,” Hopkins said. “You know, I did the best I could, but you know, okay, I think if somebody doesn’t want to be part of my life, fine,”
“I wish her well and all that, but I don’t want to talk about my daughter. Those things are over.”
The Oscar-winning actor, 80, has reportedly not spoken to his daughter for two decades.
Hopkins added: “I’ve got no blame. People do what they do. And I don’t understand it and it doesn’t bother me. I can’t waste my time worrying about it. And I’m not cold, I’m just thinking, ‘Oh well, that’s the way it is’. ”
In an interview with Radio Times last week The Silence of the Lambs actor said he didn’t “have any idea” whether his estranged daughter had children, according to The Telegraph.
“I don’t have any idea. People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘get on with your life.’ People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other.”
When told that sounded rather cold, he added, “Well, it is cold. Because life is cold. You don’t have to like your family. Children don’t like their fathers. You don’t have to love each other.”
Hopkins previously said he hoped to mend his relationship with his daughter Abigail, 48, whom he walked out on when she was a toddler. Abigail was the child of Hopkin’s first marriage, to Petronella Barker. The pair briefly reconnected in the 1990s and she appeared in two of his films, Shadowlands and The Remains Of The Day. But in 2002 he revealed they were again estranged.
