While many parents choose to name their baby after a loved one or choose a fairly common moniker that they’ve always loved, some seek to stand out and pick a more unusual choice for their newborn. And 2019 saw some very unique names crop up.

The author of The Little Book of Bogan Baby Names, Sabrina Rogers-Anderson, has unveiled what she’s described as the 20 most popular bogan names of 2019 in a first-person piece for Kidspot. And while some simply had unusual spellings on otherwise well-known names, others were totally new ones altogether.

From Tigger and Windy, to Panda and Tokyo, she picked apart each choice on the site with some hilarious comments. First up, the name Anomaly got a harsh grilling from the author, as she claimed the family should have Googled it before choosing it. In fact, the dictionary definition means “one that is abnormal or does not fit in”.

The names then went from Antwohnette (which could be a misspelling of French girls’ name Antoinette) to Charmayanne, which Rogers-Anderson claimed was given an extra ‘A’ to make it different – but only resulted in her getting a headache as she tried to pronounce it.

Next up, the name Panda made the list, with the author joking: “NOPE! Not a name. I checked the Big Book of Acceptable Baby Names and Panda is definitely not in there. What kind of surname does this even work with? Panda Anderson? Panda Campbell? Nope. No. Nunh-unh.”

Other tops ones included Sianna-Marrie in fifth place, Snowdrop in sixth – with Rogers-Anderson conceding it at least meant something, as it was a type of flower – followed by Starlette and Velvette respectively. She wrote at this point: “Add a useless ‘-ette’ at the end for an extra dash of girlish charm and you’ve completely lost me.”

Close behind them was the bizarre name Vin’nyla, while tenth place went to Windy – a choice that would surely lead to a few nightmares in the school playground. Brayan, Kanaan, Kairo and Pluto took out the next four spots, with the latter earning a funny reaction from the author who claimed: “Pluto reminds me of a full planet that was recently demoted to a dwarf planet and a goofy cartoon dog, but not a human boy.”

Meanwhile the name Precise was also listed, which Rogers-Anderson claimed simply isn’t a name at all, while the list ended with Sincere, Tenysi, Tigger, Tokyo and Wiatt.

It comes after last year’s list included everything from Bylan to Chavelle and Carridyn. The names only got more unique from there with Silverina, Xayvya and Tannyyn making an appearance alongside perhaps the most creative of them all, Squire Sebastian Senator.

Elsewhere, a list of Victoria’s favourite baby names from last year looked very different when it was released in January. Births Deaths and Marriages Victoria revealed the most popular names for the state in 2018 at the time, with some staying in the top 10 for a number of years in a row.

In Victoria at least, Oliver was dubbed the favourite choice for boys, while Olivia took out number one position for girls. Oliver was chosen a whopping 507 times and Olivia 374. This was followed by Jack, William, Noah and Thomas for males and Charlotte, Amelia, Mia and Ava with females.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Henry, Charlie and Max also make an appearance in the top 10, while Chloe, Matilda and Isla were also hot options.
