From Arctic-cold blasts sweeping Europe to shifting global politics, this week’s top stories capture a world in motion. Across the Continent, powerful winter storms brought snow, ice and travel chaos – and chilling scenes worthy of any postcard. Meanwhile on the world stage, political headlines continued to stir debate, with moves by the United States government drawing reactions from allies and rivals alike. Scroll through our best Pictures of the Week to see compelling moments that tell the story beyond the headlines.

Week in Review

A deep, cold snap across Europe dominated both weather and travel headlines this week. Powerful winter storms – including Storm Goretti – hammered the UK, France, Germany and beyond, leaving widespread power outages, closed schools, grounded flights and disrupted rail services. Temperatures plunged well below seasonal averages, and authorities grappled with icy roads and transport chaos as heavy snow blanketed towns and cities. Emergency services responded to multiple fatalities linked to treacherous winter conditions.

On the diplomatic and political front, United States president Donald Trump remained at the centre of international attention. The U.S. announced it will withdraw from dozens of international organisations, a move that has drawn concern from global partners about America’s role in international cooperation. European leaders – including France’s Emmanuel Macron – criticised what they see as a retreat from longstanding alliances and norms. Tensions over strategic territories such as Greenland also surfaced, with U.S.–Danish discussions expected after Trump’s renewed interest in the Arctic region.

Elsewhere, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to make headlines, with major attacks and diplomatic discussions unfolding as leaders seek pathways to stability.

From breathtaking snow scenes to protests, memorials and political flashpoints, our curated gallery captures the moments that defined the week — photography that brings global events to life.
