Dear Readers,
There are, in life, certain small indignities one simply ought not endure, and a recalcitrant zip is surely among them. Whether on a well-appointed boot, a tidy sneaker, or indeed a stout cardigan of the sort one keeps for cold mornings, a sticking fastening can quite undo the tone of the day. Happily, most such troubles may be resolved with a modicum of patience and a light touch.
Begin, as ever, with cleanliness … One finds that zips, much like hallways and hatstands, gather an astonishing amount of grime. Dust, lint, and the odd mysterious particle insinuate themselves between the teeth. A soft brush, nothing too vigorous, do the trick, and will generally suffice to restore order. For more obstinate grime, a cotton bud lightly moistened with warm, soapy water may be employed. Do ensure the zip is quite dry thereafter – dampness is so often the root of further mischief.
A whisper of lubrication can be highly beneficial when a zip becomes stiff or reluctant, it is rarely obstinacy – more often, it is dryness. A discreet application of something to ease its passage is all that is required. A graphite pencil, drawn gently along the teeth, is admirably effective. Alternatively, the faintest touch of beeswax or lip balm will encourage a most satisfactory glide. One mustn’t overdo it, of course; excess invites dust, and we are back where we began. Uh, perish the thought!
Now, should the zip part company with itself – opening behind the slider in a most disloyal fashion – it may be that the slider has grown a trifle lax. With a pair of pliers (and a steady hand), it may be coaxed ever so slightly back into firmness. Restraint is key, one is correcting, not punishing.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zip will, at the least convenient moment, seize upon surrounding fabric. Tugging is quite out of the question – it only worsens the entanglement. Instead, ease the zip downward and gently persuade the fabric free, perhaps with the assistance of a pin or tweezers. Calm persistence will prevail.
Zips on boots and sneakers lead rather strenuous lives, exposed as they are to mud, grit, and the general indignities of the outdoors. Once cleaned, a light application of a silicone-based protector may be most beneficial, particularly in damp weather. Think of it as a sensible coat against the elements.
And, one must not neglect the zip on a good, weighty cardigan – particularly those charming, somewhat rustic varieties with more substantial teeth. Knitwear, being inclined to shed, does have a tendency to clog its own fastenings. A regular brushing and the occasional whisper of wax will keep matters running as smoothly as one could wish.
And finally, there comes a moment when even the most diligent care cannot redeem a zip whose teeth are warped or whose slider has given up the ghost entirely. In such cases, it is far wiser to consult a competent tailor or cobbler than to soldier on in frustration.
In all things, a little maintenance, carried out with care and consistency, preserves both function and dignity. And really, one should expect nothing less from one’s zips.
Until next week my darlings – I bid you all a fond farewell.
