Indoor plants even a forgetful gardener can keep alive

Having a bit of greenery inside the home lifts the spirits, freshens the air, and adds a touch of life to the room. But if you’ve ever found yourself apologising to a wilted fern or saying goodbye to a once-proud peace lily, you’re not alone.

The good news? Some plants are nearly impossible to kill. They thrive on neglect, forgive the odd dry week, and still manage to look fabulous. Whether you’re in a sunny Queensland flat or a chilly Victorian unit, these are the houseplants that even the most forgetful gardener can enjoy.

1. Snake plant (a.k.a. Mother-in-law’s tongue)

Don’t let the name put you off — this plant is a legend. With striking upright leaves and a habit of surviving just about anything, it’s perfect for beginners (or serial plant-forgetters).

Why it’s great:

  • Only needs water every 2–3 weeks
  • Thrives in low light
  • Cleans the air while sitting quietly in the corner

2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

ZZ plants are as tough as they come — glossy, sculptural, and unbothered by your watering schedule. They’ll still look happy even after a holiday or a hot week with the blinds drawn.

Why it’s great:

  • Handles drought like a champ
  • Doesn’t fuss about light levels
  • Practically thrives on neglect

3. Aloe Vera

Not only does aloe look lovely on a windowsill, but it’s also handy to have around — just snap off a bit of a leaf for soothing sunburn or dry skin. Plus, it barely needs any attention.

Why it’s great:

  • Prefers being ignored between waterings
  • Loves a sunny spot
  • Has built-in benefits for skin and first aid

4. Pothos (a.k.a. Devil’s ivy)

This one’s a champion climber or trailer, depending on how you pot it. It grows quickly, forgives dry spells, and adds instant lushness to any room.

Why it’s great:

  • Very tolerant of inconsistent watering
  • Thrives in bright or low light
  • Looks lovely hanging or climbing — a stylish choice

5. Jade Plant (Money Plant)

This chubby-leafed succulent is considered lucky by many, but what’s even luckier is how easy it is to care for. Give it some light and a sip of water now and then, and it’ll live for years.

Why it’s great:

  • Lives long and grows slow
  • Needs very little watering
  • Can be passed down like a family recipe

Bonus Tips for the Forgetful Plant Parent:

  • Pick the right pot: Look for drainage holes so water doesn’t pool at the bottom and cause root rot.
  • Put it where you’ll see it: Near the kettle or telly is perfect — you’re more likely to remember it exists.
  • Use a plant-watering app or sticky note: A little reminder goes a long way.
  • Water less, not more: Most plant deaths come from kindness (i.e. overwatering), not neglect.
