1980 — Mount St Helens erupts

One of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in United States history took place on this day in 1980 when Mount St Helens erupted in Washington state. The powerful blast killed 57 people and dramatically reshaped the surrounding landscape.

1912 — The first Indian film premieres

India’s first full-length feature film, Shree Pundalik, premiered on May 18, 1912, marking an important moment in the history of Indian cinema.

1969 — Apollo 10 launches into space

NASA launched Apollo 10 on this day in 1969. The mission served as the crucial “dress rehearsal” for the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing two months later.
