1948: Israel declares independence

On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel. The declaration came as the British Mandate for Palestine ended and marked the beginning of a new chapter in Middle Eastern history. The following day, neighbouring Arab nations launched military action, beginning the first Arab-Israeli war.

1963: Australia launches its first television satellite station

Australia took an important step in communications history on this day in 1963 when work continued on the Carnarvon satellite tracking station in Western Australia, part of the global network supporting NASA’s space missions. The facility later played a key role in tracking the Apollo moon missions, including the 1969 moon landing.

1973: Skylab launches into space

NASA launched Skylab, America’s first space station, on May 14, 1973. The station orbited Earth for six years and hosted astronauts who carried out scientific experiments and medical research in space.

1998: Frank Sinatra dies aged 82

Legendary singer and actor Frank Sinatra died on this day in Los Angeles. Known as “Ol’ Blue Eyes”, Sinatra recorded timeless classics including My Way, Fly Me to the Moon and New York, New York, and remained one of the defining entertainers of the 20th century.
