On October 5, 1961, Breakfast at Tiffany’s had its world premiere in New York.

Audrey becomes Holly

Hepburn starred as Holly Golightly, the glamorous and complicated young woman at the centre of the film based on Truman Capote’s novella.

The film premiered at Radio City Music Hall and gave Hepburn one of the defining roles of her career.

Then there was Moon River.

Written by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, the song became inseparable from Hepburn’s Holly and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

More than six decades later, Hepburn’s black Givenchy dress, pearls and elegant updo remain among Hollywood’s most recognisable looks.

What a day 1962 turned out to be

Exactly one year later, October 5 delivered two more pieces of pop-culture history.

The Beatles released their first UK single, Love Me Do, backed with P.S. I Love You.

It reached No.17 in Britain, a modest beginning for four young men from Liverpool who were about to become rather famous.

That same day, Dr. No opened in Britain, introducing cinema audiences to Sean Connery as James Bond.

Within 12 months, popular culture had been handed Holly Golightly, the Beatles’ first single and cinema’s James Bond.

Australia’s final Western Front action

On October 5, 1918, Australian troops fought at Montbrehain, the last action involving Australian infantry on the Western Front during the First World War.

The 6th Australian Brigade captured the village and took about 400 German prisoners.

The victory came at a heavy price, with 430 Australian casualties.

Born on this day

Now this is some birthday list.

Steve Miller turns 83 today, while AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson turns 79.

And further more, Bob Geldof and Raiders of the Lost Ark star Karen Allen both turn 75 today.

Four names, four very different careers and plenty of memories between them.
