André Rieu 2026: everything you need to know about the Maastricht concert coming to Australian cinemas

There is a moment in every André Rieu concert – and those of us who have seen one in any form will know it – when the camera pulls back to reveal the full sweep of the Vrijthof Square in Maastricht, the Johann Strauss Orchestra in full flight, thousands of people on their feet, and the man himself in his white tie and tails conducting it all with that enormous, slightly mischievous grin. And you think: how does he keep doing this?

The answer, it turns out, is that he simply loves it too much to stop.

This year marks twenty years since André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra first performed in the Vrijthof Square in his beloved hometown of Maastricht – and he is celebrating with a landmark new concert called Viva Maastricht!

Twenty years of the world’s most joyful concert

The Vrijthof is the oldest square in the Netherlands, and for twenty summers it has been transformed into what amounts to the world’s most spectacular open-air ballroom. Rieu himself puts it simply: “The unique atmosphere of the Vrijthof touches both heart and soul.”

The 2026 anniversary concert celebrates two decades of magical summer nights, music and celebration – and by all accounts it is the most ambitious Maastricht concert yet. Viva Maastricht! welcomes artists never before seen on the Vrijthof stage, alongside the full Johann Strauss Orchestra and the beloved performers who have become familiar faces to Rieu’s global army of devoted fans.

André Rieu in 2026 — still going strong at 76

For anyone who has been wondering how the Maestro is faring, the reassuring answer is: very well indeed. At 76, André Rieu maintains a demanding schedule, performing globally with his orchestra. He is currently touring across 21 countries with 70 upcoming concerts – a schedule that would exhaust performers half his age.

There was a brief health scare in early 2024 when Rieu became unwell during a Mexican tour and was forced to cancel concerts – a decision his son Pierre described as deeply difficult given the 40,000 fans and 125 crew members affected. But the recovery was swift and complete, and Rieu has been back on stage with his customary energy ever since.

Rieu has spoken previously about taking his health seriously after being forced to cancel concerts twice, hiring a personal trainer and overhauling his diet. He has also noted with some amusement that his healthy lifestyle has proved contagious among the orchestra, with members organising gym sessions and Zumba classes in hotel fitness rooms around the world.

The broken toe he reportedly sustained earlier this year in Riga, Latvia? He played the full program anyway. Because of course he did.

Why this matters for Starts at 60 readers

André Rieu has, over twenty years, built something genuinely rare in the modern music industry: a devoted, multi-generational audience that comes back year after year not because they have to, but because the experience reliably delivers joy. Real, unself-conscious, stand-up-and-waltz-in-the-aisles joy. In a world that sometimes feels chronically short of that particular commodity, it is not nothing.

Viva Maastricht! is twenty years of that joy distilled into a single concert. Three days. Select cinemas. Don’t miss it.
