Described by Radio Times as featuring performances where “Staunton and Nighy are spellbinding,” &Sons brings together an extraordinary ensemble cast for a story about family secrets, mortality and the lies we tell the people closest to us.

What’s it about?

It’s been almost 20 years since an “incident” tore apart the Dyer family. An incident that has a name: Andy. Andy is the reason his world-famous father, Andrew, no longer speaks to his adult sons, nor to his ex-wife. Andrew is a novelist best known to the world as A.N. Dyer, whose first book became a best-selling instant classic, creating a cult around its elusive author.

Andrew wakes up one morning convinced he’s about to die. He needs to set right the major relationships of his life, so he summons his sons to be with him. But when they arrive, laden with their own problems and expecting to finally hear an apology, Andrew doesn’t seek their forgiveness. Instead, he tells them something so wild it couldn’t possibly be true.

The cast and the people behind the camera

&Sons is directed by acclaimed Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Trapero, best known for The Clan, marking his English-language feature debut. The screenplay comes from Trapero alongside Sarah Polley, the Oscar-winning writer of Women Talking, adapting David Gilbert’s acclaimed 2013 novel of the same name.

Leading the cast, Bill Nighy transforms into the reclusive, long-haired and bearded literary legend Andrew Dyer, alongside Imelda Staunton as his estranged wife. They’re joined by an equally impressive supporting cast, including George MacKay and Johnny Flynn as Andrew’s older, estranged sons, Noah Jupe as his youngest son Andy, and Dominic West in a pivotal supporting role.

Speaking about what drew him to the project, Trapero said the story’s appeal lay in the universality of a “normal” family dynamic, despite the extraordinary circumstances the Dyer family finds itself in. He also spoke warmly of his cast, noting that although Nighy, Staunton and West are internationally acclaimed, well-established actors, they approached every line of the script as if it were their very first.

The film premiered to strong reception at the Toronto International Film Festival, where organisers described it as exploring “artistic aspirations and mortality” in what they called “a very original and entertaining drama.”
