What to watch this week: Cold cases, spy thrillers and plenty of deception

This week’s watchlist has plenty for crime and mystery fans, with a chilling new Robert De Niro thriller, the return of one of Britain’s best cold-case dramas and an international spy series starring Eva Green and Vincent Cassel. There is also romance under the Mallorcan sun, revealing conversations with some very famous faces and the return of The Traitors Australia.

SBS On Demand – Free – Liaison
Eva Green and Vincent Cassel lead this slick international thriller combining espionage, cyber warfare and a complicated relationship from the past. The six-part series follows two agents and former lovers who are forced to work together as they attempt to combat a wave of cyberattacks threatening the UK. At the same time, the pair must confront the secrets and consequences of their destructive former relationship. Moving between the UK, France, Belgium and Syria, Liaison delivers plenty of international intrigue while keeping the complicated relationship between its two leads at the heart of the story.

Netflix – Paid – The Whisper Man

Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and Hamish Linklater star in this dark thriller based on Alex North’s bestselling novel. After his young son disappears, widowed crime writer Tom Kennedy turns to his estranged father, a retired detective, for help. The disappearance appears to be connected to a serial killer from a decades-old case, forcing father and son to work together as the frightening mystery unfolds. Combining a child-abduction mystery with a complicated family relationship, The Whisper Man looks like one for viewers who prefer their crime stories on the darker side.

BritBox – Paid – Unforgotten: Season 6

One of Britain’s most compelling cold-case dramas returns, with DCI Jess James and DI Sunny Khan faced with another mystery that gradually draws together a group of seemingly unconnected people. Season six begins when dismembered human remains are dredged up from Whitney Marsh. Jess, played by Sinéad Keenan, and Sunny, played by Sanjeev Bhaskar, must establish the victim’s identity and piece together the final years of his life. As the investigation progresses, a number of strangers are pulled into the case and connections begin to emerge. Fans of Unforgotten will know what to expect: a carefully unravelled mystery where the story is as much about the people touched by the crime as it is about discovering who was responsible.

Prime Video – Paid – The Last Sunrise

Mallorca provides the beautiful backdrop for this romantic drama starring Maia Reficco and Eva Longoria. Based on the novel by Anna Todd, The Last Sunrise follows college student Ry, who is living with a chronic illness and heads to Mallorca for a summer escape with her mother. While there, she unexpectedly falls for Julián, played by Fernando Lindez, and begins to embrace living in the moment. However, Ry’s worsening condition and long-hidden family secrets threaten to change everything before the summer is over. With romance, family drama and a spectacular Mediterranean setting, this is one for viewers looking for something more emotional this weekend.

ABC iview – Free – Take 5 with Zan Rowe: Season 5

Zan Rowe returns with another season of Take 5, the acclaimed interview series built around the idea that the music we love can tell the story of our lives. Each guest chooses five songs connected to a particular theme, with their selections opening the door to conversations about their memories, careers and experiences. Season five expands to eight episodes and features an impressive line-up including Shania Twain, David Byrne, Peter Garrett, Jacinda Ardern, Darren Hayes, Lainey Wilson, Genesis Owusu and Vika & Linda Bull.
