Carry On films ‘to make politically correct comeback’ with new cast of actors

They helped to cement the careers of some of the most iconic stars of the 1960s, with the likes of Dame Barbara Windsor, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques all getting a boost in show business after bagging starring roles in the renowned Carry On film series.

Now, after almost four decades since the final instalment was released, it seems like the popular comedy franchise could be set to make a comeback, following the conclusion of a nine-year legal battle to secure the rights.

However, the popular series, which was known and loved for its risqué comedy, could be set to be undergo a modern makeover, meaning any new releases would be “more politically correct” than previous films, reports The Sun.

The proposed new films would also feature an all new cast with film producer – and long-time Carry On fan – Brian Baker telling the news outlet: “We’ll be bringing together a new team of actors with their own idiosyncrasies and personalities for the films.

“They will be adapted to bring it up to modern times. We’ll have to be a bit more politically correct today.”
“This ruling means we can carry out Peter Rogers’ legacy and get everything into gear.

Baker, who is 72, is planning to release a range of Carry On merchandise in a bid to fund a revival of the comedy franchise, after the Intellectual Property Office in the UK ruled that broadcaster ITV’s trademark rights were not invalid as they were not using the brand.

The news of a potential comeback has not been well received online however, with the majority of people slamming Baker’s proposal.

Many commented that the franchise is best left in the past as “no one could come close” to the iconic original cast.

One person wrote: “Never going to work PC is bad enough bit nobody can replace the cast of the carry on films.” While another commented: “No, they were all fantastic comedy actors and actresses, who worked together like a dream. No-one nowadays could even come close.”

A third said: “Somethings can’t be remade, The Carry On films were cheeky, full of innuendos and had some excellent British comedians/actors. Who would we get now Carr, Hill, Mcintyre … No thanks.”

While another wrote: “As much as I love the Carry On series it was very much of its time. A new film is a dreadful idea.”
