Downton Abbey has released the trailer for their new sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era which will follow the mysterious circumstances surrounding the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa in the South of France.

The new trailer, set in 1922, has given fans a taste of what is to come in Downton’s newest film, exposing intriguing new characters and highly anticipated drama.

The official teaser was released to YouTube by Focus Features on Tuesday, February 15, and has already stacked up an impressive 1,265,622 views.

To be expected, the new Downton Abbey trailer features stunningly classic sceneries and settings, elaborate costumes and an eye for visual perfection, with first-class performances from new and old characters.

The new film is set to uncover a fascinating scandal surrounding the mysterious man who gifted the Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley, an expensive villa for reasons yet to be discovered.

The trailer features a cut from the new film, where The Dower Countess played by English actress Maggie Smith, tells her family of her newfound inheritance.

“Years ago, before you were born, I met a man. And now I’ve come into possession of a villa in the south of France,” Violet tells them.

The family responds with understandable surprise, her granddaughter Lady Mary Crawley asking, “And you never thought to turn it down?”.

“Do I look as though I’d turn down a Villa in the South of France?” Violet responds sarcastically while Mary smiles at the remark.

The film will also see a group of Hollywood folk arrive at Downton to film a new movie, introducing new and exciting characters to an already spectacular Downton cast. Some new characters will include Dominic West as a Hollywood actor, Laura Haddock, as a silent screen star, and Hugh Dancy, as the fictional director.

Lady Grantham, played by actress Elizabeth McGovern, told the Daily Mail of the “clash” of characters. “The modern world is coming to Downton,” she said.

“You see this clash of cultures when Hollywood meets Downton.

A New Era is set in 1928, nine months after the first one, when ‘talkies’, as opposed to silent films, were just starting to be made and they’ve got all these Hollywood movie stars and the director of a talking movie staying at the Abbey.”

The film is set to make its debut in cinemas on May 20, 2022.
