If you’ve ever purchased a car, chances are you put a lot of thought into the colour you choose. After all, you’ll be driving around in your pride and joy for many years and you probably don’t want to be getting from point a to point b in a car that isn’t a colour you like.
Car manufacturer Holden has teamed up with Angela Wright, author of The Beginner’s Guide to Colour Psychology and the founder of London-based consultancy Colour Affects, to uncover the kinds of car colours that align with different personality types. According to Wright, it’s our personalities that can push us to purchase an item in a certain colour over another. Yep, you read that right.
“Specific personality types have an affinity with certain colours that can influence purchase decisions for anything from clothes to cars,” Wright said in a statement.
And if you’re the kind of person who’s impartial to a little voodoo, Wright can tell you a lot about your personality based on the colour of your car.
Apparently if your car is white, it could mean that you’re a peacekeeper. You’re usually open-minded, optimistic and hopeful, while the colour also signifies purity and is a popular choice when people are celebrating a new beginning.
In contrast, black is for professionals who are reliable, pragmatic and stable and is often associated with power and sophistication. According to Wright, it is normally a colour picked by someone of authority who is serious, sophisticated and decisive.
Blue is often a colour chosen by those who a dedicated, faithful and calm, while red signifies energy, passion and is the colour of choice for those who crave attention. These people are also more likely to be rebels. Meanwhile, pink car owners are typically romantic, hopeful, sensitive and delightful.
If green is your thing, it typically means you’re generous and protective, while yellow car owners are typically artists who are creative and humorous. Those with a love of all things orange tend to be interested in adventure and are more likely to be enthusiastic, uninhibited and independent. Purple typically signifies you’re protective, ambitious and individualistic.
Grey car owners are generally wise, intelligent and insightful, while different shades of brown can mean you’re charismatic, confident or successful, or supportive, down-to-earth and comforting if you’ve opted for a darker shade of brown.
“We are always exploring new and exciting applications and technologies that help to bring a colour to life,” Richard Ferlazzo – Director of GM and Holden Australia Design said in a statement. “Your vehicle choice is an expression of your lifestyle and there are certainly different priorities that come with that selection. When designing colours, we always keep in mind the lifestyle needs of our different customers while still offering variety for different personalities.”
Of course, there are those of us who are just happy to have anything with four wheels that gets us around town.
