Are you an avid knitter? Do you want to use your hobby to help the world? Now you can with the Penguin Foundation!
The Penguin Foundation has put the callout for people around the world to knit pullovers for penguins undergoing rehabilitation after injury and illness from oil spills and other accidents.
Lyn Bloom, a knitter for the Phillip Island charity organisation says, “it’s not just oil spills that cause problems for local penguins. Fishermen at sea might clean out a container and dump toxic chemicals and plastics into the ocean.”
While they might look a little funny and very cute, these jumpers are so important in helping them regain full health. Wearing the jumpers prevents penguins from ingesting toxics and chemicals on their feathers as they attempt to clean themselves with their beaks.
The penguin Foundation shares the knitted pullovers with other penguin rehabilitation centres all over the world so by knitting one you could be helping hundreds of penguins worldwide.
The Penguin Foundation have provided more information on knitting a pullover and provided a pattern on their website. You can access these by clicking here.
A couple of pullovers will go a long way in helping our little cool-weather friends so get involved today!
