Rain or snow: 15 fun and family-friendly activities that don’t involve a screen

When the rain sets in, the kettle’s been boiled three times, and you’ve already read the paper cover to cover, it’s easy to slip into the trap of watching “just one more episode”. But sometimes, it’s nice to step away from screens altogether — to rediscover the quiet pleasure of a hands-on activity, a creative project, or simply a bit of old-fashioned fun.

Whether you’re home alone, with a partner, or looking for something to enjoy with the grandkids, here are 15 screen-free ideas to brighten even the gloomiest of afternoons.

1. Tackle a jigsaw puzzle

A classic for good reason — puzzles are calming, satisfying, and a great way to pass the time without feeling idle. Add a cup of tea and some old tunes in the background, and you’ve got yourself a cosy afternoon.

2. Write a letter or card

Put pen to paper and surprise a friend, sibling, or grandchild with a handwritten letter or note. It’s a lost art — and receiving real mail feels like a warm hug.

3. Pick up some knitting or crochetting

Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or a curious beginner, yarn-based crafts are soothing, portable, and perfect for rainy weather. Bonus: you can make lovely gifts along the way.

4. Start a memory journal

Capture family stories, childhood memories, travel tales or odd little moments that still make you laugh. Even a few lines a day can become a precious keepsake.

5. Play a game of cards

Dust off the deck and rediscover classics like Rummy, Canasta, or Solitaire. If you’re with others, try 500, Bridge, or even a few cheeky hands of Snap with the grandkids.

6. Bake something simple

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh scones, banana bread, or Anzac biscuits on a cold, grey day. Plus, you get to eat the results — preferably while they’re still warm.

7. Tend to indoor plants

Give the houseplants a little love — repotting, pruning or simply moving them to a better spot. They’ll thank you by freshening the air and brightening the room.

8. Do a bit of crafting

Try scrapbooking, card-making, or even making your own bookmarks. Don’t aim for perfect — just enjoy the process.

9. Pull out a board game

Modern or vintage, solo or social — there’s a board game for every mood. (Need ideas? See our articles on classic and modern board games over-60s are loving!)

10. Revisit a favourite book

There’s comfort in returning to a well-loved story — especially when the rain is pattering against the window and you’re tucked under a blanket.

11. Sort through a memory box

Go through old photos, postcards, ticket stubs and souvenirs. You might rediscover a forgotten gem or find something worth framing or sharing.

12. Try a new tea or coffee blend

Turn an ordinary cuppa into a little adventure — sample a herbal tea, try a fancy plunger brew, or recreate an old-school milkshake or malted drink.

13. Put on some music and have a sing or dance

No one’s watching — turn up the old favourites and have a private dance party or singalong. It’s great for the mood (and the joints).

14. Try a crossword or sudoku

Whether you’re a cryptic crossword devotee or a sudoku novice, these little brainteasers are great for keeping your mind sharp and spirits high.

15. Watch the weather and just daydream

Sometimes, doing nothing is just the thing. Sit by the window, listen to the rain, sip your tea and let your thoughts wander. It’s not lazy — it’s restorative.
