If you’ve got a frozen apple pie in your freezer, you may want to check that it’s safe to eat.

Nanna’s Family Apple Pies are being recalled across Australia by Patties Foods Limited after glass was found in an ingredient used for the 600g version of the pies.

The New South Wales Food Authority issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon, informing the public that the pies were being recalled. The pies are sold in major supermarkets across the country including Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Foodland and other independent supermarkets.

“The recall is due to the potential presence of glass in an ingredient used in the 600g Nanna’s Family Apple Pie,” The NSW Food Authority said in a statement. “This is a result of an equipment failure with the supplier.”

No other Nanna’s products have been affected by the recall.

The product customers need to beware of is the specific Nanna’s Family Apple Pie 600g found in a cardboard box. Products impacted have a best before date of October 21, 2020 and October 22, 2020.

The recall advised that consumers who eat the pies containing glass could be injured and explained that Patties Foods Ltd has initiated the recall of the affected batches as a precautionary measure. At the time of publication, no one had been injured by consuming glass found in the products.

Anyone with affected products is advised not to eat it and to instead return the pies to the place of purchase for a full refund. Equally, the public should seek medical advice as soon as possible if they believe their health is at risk.

The pies are the latest of an array of popular Aussie items that have been pulled from shelves in Australia this year. The fruit industry was impacted earlier in 2018 when a number of fruits were spiked with sewing needles, sparking copycat cases around the nation and even impacting fruit sold in New Zealand.

Rock melons were also pulled from shelves after a deadly listeria outbreak, while a popular brand of Silverside was also recalled in October over fears it also contained the listeria virus.

Patties Foods produces some of the most iconic pies and pastries in Australia. In addition to a range of sweet treats through Nanna’s, the company is also behind Four ‘N Twenty pies, Patties pies, Herbert Adams pies and Chef’s Pride.
