Barbara Bush refuses treatment as health fails fast

Former First Lady of the United States is failing in health, her family have confirmed.

The 92-year-old served as First Lady when George H. W. Bush was America’s President between 1989 and 1993. She is also the mother of George W. Bush, who was the 43rd President of the United States.

In a statement, Barbara’s family have confirmed that despite her rapidly declining health, she won’t be seeking any further medical treatment.

“Following a recent series of hospitalisations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort and care,” a statement read.

“It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself – thanks to her abiding faith – but for others,” the statement continued. “She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving.”

Both Barbara and her husband have battled a series of health problems in recent years. The pair were noticeably absent from Donald Trump’s Inauguration last January and were forced to explain themselves. They released a statement at the time, noting they weren’t well.

“Barbara and I are so sorry we can’t be there for your Inauguration on January 20th,” Bush wrote at the time. “My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we’re stuck in Texas.”

Although it’s not yet known was Barbara’s health condition is, people are already sending her their well-wishes on social media.

One person wrote: “Barbara Bush was the first First Lady I remember and she was smart, strong and graceful. At 92 I still think the same. Praying for you Mrs Bush. You were from a simpler time”.

A second message read: “I am sending all my love and prayers to the entire Bush family today – Barbara Bush is a woman of great strength, patriotism and an iconic first lady of our times who has touched and inspired countless lives”.

A third comment added: “Thoughts with one of America’s most loved women , former First Lady Barbara Bush. Her health has been deteriorating and I join thousands in hoping she is comfortable and knows how loved she is throughout the world”.

Earlier this year, Barbara spoke candidly about her ongoing health issues in Smith College’s alumnae magazine.

“I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe,” she wrote. “I’m not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts! Also, George Bush has given me the world. He is the best — thoughtful and loving.”
