Seven great ways to deodorise your kitchen

Funky smells can take your kitchen from fresh to foul in an instant.

Whether it’s a lingering odour in your fridge or something festering in your kitchen sink, there comes a time when a good deodorise is needed.

Instead of using harsh chemicals, there’s one everyday household object that can make your kitchen smell as good as new.

Baking soda has many uses in the home, and keeping your kitchen fresh is one of them.

Here are seven ways you can use baking soda to deodorise your kitchen:

  1. Keep your fridge and freezer fresh. By keeping an open box of baking soda in your fridge and freezer and changing it every 30 days, you can stop flavour transfer and keep your food tasting fresher for longer.
  2. Flush away the festering smell in your sink. Is your sink stinking out your kitchen? Try sprinkling some baking soda in your sink, scrub and wipe down the sides and bottom with a sponge and rinse with hot water. Why no use the old baking soda from your fridge? Tip it down your sink and run some warm water to wash away the sink stink.
  3. Dispose of the garbage disposal smell.  Do you have a garbage disposal in your kitchen that’s emitting some unpleasant odours? Try running hot water down the drain for a few minutes and pouring half a cup of baking soda into the disposal. Give it a few minutes, then run some more hot water to rinse. Want a fresh citrus smell? Add pieces of lemon to the disposal while it’s running, then rinse with cold water. For added effect, you can use ice cubes while running the cold water.
  4. Cut away the cutting board smells. Try scrubbing your wood and plastic cutting boards with baking soda to get rid of any lingering odour. Just mix a paste of baking soda and water, use the paste to scrub your cutting boards and rinse them with hot water.
  5. Scrub the stench off your pots and pans. Leftover food lurking on your pots and pans can make your whole kitchen smell. Try sprinkling baking soda on any stains or food spots, adding a little bit of hot water to make a paste. Leave the paste sit for an hour and then your pots and pans will wipe completely clean with a sponge.
  6. Wash away your dishwasher woes. A dirty dishwasher can really make your kitchen reek. Sprinkling baking soda on the bottom of your dishwasher will make any lingering food smells wash away. If your dishwasher needs a deeper clean, make up a paste of baking soda and hot water and then, using a toothbrush, clean and scrub the crevices around the dishwasher with the paste.
  7. Bin the garbage bin smell. Your garbage bin can be the worst offender for stinking out your kitchen. Try putting some baking soda on a sponge and wiping down the inside of your bin. When changing bin bags, sprinkle a little baking soda on the bottom of the bin and the inside of the new bag to keep your garbage odours under control.
