She nearly stole the movie with her hilarious rendition of ‘Take a Chance on Me’ in the first Mamma Mia film and it looks like Julie Walters is set to bring plenty of laughs again in the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved Abba-themed film.
A new clip for Mamma Mia 2 shows the British actress clumsily dancing across a Greek courtyard with her co-stars Christine Baranski and Amanda Seyfried as the trio belt out the classic Abba tune ‘Angel Eyes’.
Walters’ character in the film, unmarried fun-loving author Rosie Mulligan, was a standout in the 2010 original and fans have been waiting for a sneak peek at her singing and dancing in the sequel.
Now, the new clip shows Walters trying to keep up with her very flexible co-stars, including Baranski who shows off an impressive leap over a table, as the trio sing in perfect harmony to the 1979 song.
The first movie ended with Walters’ character serenading Harry, played by Stellan Skarsgård, in a bid to convince him to take a chance on her and show her some lovin’ after Donna and Sam’s (Pierce Brosnan) wedding, and while there’s no word yet on whether their romance lasted, it looks set to be a fun ride either way.
Producers have been drip feeding fans short clips from the movie ahead of its July 19 release date, and just last week sent fans into a tizzy with a preview of Cher’s rendition of ‘Fernando’.
The singer is joined on the track by Andy Garcia, who plays Fernando in the romantic comedy musical – no doubt inspiring their duet.
Cher joined the cast of the sequel as the mother of Meryl Streep’s character Donna, who is notably absent from previews of the new film, with fans speculating she’s been killed off and will only feature in flashback scenes.
While Streep is certainly a loss for the cast, Cher looks set to fill the gap with her impressive acting and superb vocals.
Her cover of ‘Fernando’ has already proved a huge hit online, as one fan tweeted: “I never would have imagined hearing Cher sing Fernando could bring me so much joy”.
Another added: “I can’t believe I am saying this out loud so to speak… I think I like @cher version of #Fernando better than the Abba version. I’m going to get hit by a lightning bolt aren’t I? #MammaMia2
