Lord and Lady Grantham reunite in sweet snap on set of Downton Abbey movie

Fans of Downton Abbey don’t have long to wait before their favourite characters are reunited on the big screen for the movie adaptation of the hit period drama.

And Downton lovers were treated to a glimpse behind the scenes on set at Highclere Castle on Sunday as Hugh Bonneville, aka the Earl of Grantham, shared a sweet photograph of himself with his television wife.

Sharing the photo on his official Instagram page, the 54-year-old actor simply wrote “McGonneville” – an amalgamation of his and Elizabeth McGovern’s names.

The photo sent fans into a frenzy, as they delighted at the sight of Hugh and Elizabeth, who plays Cora Crawley, together, ahead of the movie’s release, which is expected next September.

One fan wrote: “Absolutely thrilled & patiently waiting the movie!” Another said: “You don’t know how excited I am for this movie. I have been waiting since the end of last season. Like my heart can’t take the waiting.”

While another wrote: “You can’t imagine how much we miss you. Welcome back and might God blesses your lovely work!”

Other members of the cast have also shared updates from behind the scenes, including Michelle Dockery who plays Lady Mary Crawley, and Allen Leech, otherwise known as Tom Branson.

The long-awaited Downton Abbey movie, which will be written by the show’s creator Julian Fellowes, was confirmed in July, and filming began two months later.

Set in 1926 – one year after the final episode – the movie is expected to be an emotional rollercoaster, with Leech telling Vanity Fair: “It’s a big, epic story that’s definitely going to fill the big screen.

“That was our worry about taking the show from the small screen to the big screen. But you have Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for writing, and he’s done a great job with the story.”

The TV series won three Golden Globes and 15 Emmys from 69 nominations during its run, and its huge success right across the world has been credited for starting a new love of period dramas.
