Fans of US soap Days of our Lives are in mourning following the news that star Peggy McCay has died at the age of 90.

According to a statement from Executive Producer Ken Corday, the popular actress, who played Caroline Brady on the show, passed away at the weekend. The statement was shared on the official Days of our Lives Twitter page, although no formal cause of death has been revealed.

“This past Sunday we lost our dear Peggy McCay, known to her fans as Days of our Lives matriarch Caroline Brady,” Corday wrote. “Peggy fought tirelessly for the members of her community, and her spirit lives on in those causes.

“On a personal level, Peggy was like a grandmother to my children and a beloved member of our family. Her wonderful spirit will be deeply missed by all of us at Days of our Lives and her fans.”

McCay played Caroline on the popular show for more than 30 years, earning her several nominations for outstanding supporting actress and supporting lead actress at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

She won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1991 for her work on The Trials of Rosie O’Neill and was also well-known in the theatre community.

She was also famous for her roles in an array of other popular TV shows including Hawaiian Eye and General Hospital. Fans and co-stars alike have taken to social media to pay their respects and share their memories of the late star.

Jen Lilley, who played Theresa Donovan on Days of our Lives said McCay was like a grandmother to her.

“I just heard the news that Peggy McCay has passed,” she wrote. “She was like a real grandmother to me, a mentor, a great source of encouragement, and she was also hilariously fierce. You are deeply missed Peggy!”

Along with her moving words, Lilley shared a series of photos of her time with McCay.

Similarly, actor Thaao Penghlis, who played Andre DiMera on the soap, had nothing but kind words to say about McCay.

“Always a classy lady our Emmy winning Peggy McCay who cared about her craft, her fellow actors and the Life of Days,” he wrote. “She reigned well in this most pressured profession of Daytime.”

Actress Sal Stowers shared two vintage photos of McCay, and described her as a “beautiful and tender” woman.

“Her Presence was truly special to be around,” she said. Very honoured to have shared precious time with her. Fly with the angels Ms. McCay.”

Meanwhile Eric Martsolf, who plays Brady Black on Days of our Lives, shared a personal photo of himself with his late co-star on Instagram.

“RIP Peggy McCay. Feisty, witty, and not an unkind bone throughout her body,” he said. “She was warm to me when I first entered the hallways of DOOL, and made every word she was given poetry. I will miss this true lady of daytime.”
