A Melbourne mother was brought to tears after a frightening encounter with a snake in her own bathroom.

The young woman was sitting on the toilet when a dangerous tiger snake crawled its way up the back pipe and popped its head out, only inches from her baby, Yahoo 7 News reports.

It was a scary experience for the Greensborough resident who quickly called a snake catcher to remove the reptile from her home.

Taking to Facebook to share the story, snake catcher Mark Pelley said it took quite a while to catch the snake which had crawled back into the pipe.

“Our story today begins with a mum in the bathroom doing her business and upon looking down out of the corner of her eye to see a tiger snake crawling out of the wall in a small gap next to the pipes for the toilet,” he explained on the post.

“After mum immediately leaving the area, the snake crawled around the bathroom floor until eventually going back up the pipe.

“It took two trips out to the house and many phone calls giving advice on how to handle the snake crawling around inside but I eventually caught it on arrival – by now it had crawled into the laundry.”

Speaking to Yahoo 7 News following the ordeal Pelley said it was one of around 11 calls he responded to on Christmas day and Boxing Day this year.

The man known as the Snake Hunter urged people to be wary of snakes, warning they aren’t only found outside in bushes.

“Numbers are definitely higher than usual… they are entering through doggy doors, crawling underneath the front doors, crawling through windows and even pipes that go into houses,” he told the news outlet.

“Don’t believe they are only found in the bush. They are very common in suburbia.”

Just weeks ago a family in the Brisbane suburb of Chermside West came face to face with a python during a night time run to the bathroom.

Queensland Urban Utilities took to Facebook with photographs of the huge snake being removed from the toilet.

In photographs that are enough to make the skin of anyone who hates the reptiles crawl, a man could be seen using a cricket bat to lure the snake into a bucket and suitcase.

“Only in Australia!” the post teased. “A family in Chermside West found a surprising 4th ‘P’ in their loo on the weekend, when this python plopped by for a visit.”

They joked that python was the fourth ‘P’ after pee, poo and paper.
