Watch Trump belt out Green Acres theme dressed as hillbilly

He may be the leader of the free world, but that hasn’t stopped US President Donald Trump from sharing a vintage video of himself dressed as a hillbilly and singing the theme to the classic 1960s sitcom, Green Acres.

To put things into perspective, the 72-year-old was preparing to announce the signing of a US$867 billion (AU$ 1.21 trillion, UK £684 billion) farm bill. Officially known as the Agricultural Improvement Act, the legislation offers farm subsidies and assistance for farmers struggling to afford food. According to Fox, the congress-approved bill also legalises industrial production of hemp and will support low-income families with food programs.

In the video shared to Trump’s Instagram and Twitter pages, Trump could be seen dressed in full costume alongside actress Megan Mullally at the 2005 Emmy Awards. Mullally was dressed as Karen Walker, her iconic character from sitcom Will and Grace. The pair were competing in ‘Emmy Idol’, a spoof of singing reality show American Idol where celebrities sang covers of TV theme songs and viewers at home voted for their favourite.

Complete with a straw hat, overalls and a rake, Trump could be seen enthusiastically singing the theme song to Green Acres, a show about a New York lawyer who buys a farm in country America.

“Green Acres is the place to be,” he sang. “Farm livin’ is the life for me. Land spreadin’ out so far and wide. Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.”

The clip ended with Trump planting a kiss on Mullally, before carrying her off stage. It sparked a number of responses online, with Mullally expressing her horror in the clip she once happily appeared in.

“Omg [oh my god],” she tweeted. “If you guys need me, I’ll be in a hole in the ground.”

She also took to Instagram with a screenshot of Trump’s tweet and simply captioned it “no”.

Others have shown their support for the Will and Grace star, who has previously explained she does not support Trump as president.

“At least you weren’t wearing overalls and a straw hat,” one tweet read.

Another person said: “You did not deserve this! We love you so much.”

Others posted hilarious gifs of the 60-year-old’s Will and Grace character Karen, who is known for being an alcoholic and Trump supporter.

Mullally had previously spoken about her regret in performing with Trump. During an appearance on The Late Show last year, she described a photo of herself with Trump as her “suicide note” and said that while the segment was meant to be a complete joke, it was something Trump really wanted to win. When the duo did win, she claimed he phoned her the next day and congratulated her for her part in the victory.

As for Trump, he clearly has no regrets about the vintage moment, even bragging about the performance to reporters when announcing the Agricultural Improvement Act at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.

“That was from the Emmys. I sang ‘Green Acres’ and received a very nice award that night,” he explained. “That was really great. So we had that. Somebody had it. I said, ‘Put it on. Not too much of it, but put it on’. Congratulations, my man.”
