British department store John Lewis has highlighted the true meaning of Christmas and the power of a gift in it’s new festive advertisement featuring music legend Elton John.
The powerful two minute clip, which was released this week on social media, has proven how one simple present can make a world of difference and truly change the course of someone’s life.
The advert begins in the present day with Elton sitting on a chair playing a piano by his Christmas tree. It then works backwards chronologically through the singer’s life, from his performances on stage in front of thousands to his first time in a recording studio and right back to his childhood when he first performed in front of a crowd.
However, the truly emotional part is when a young Elton is seen opening a special present on Christmas morning – his grandmother’s piano. While to some this may have been just a present, it was this gift that led the now 71-year-old down the path to become a musician.
The advert is then summed up with one important and touching message: “Some gifts are more than just a gift”.
The tear-jerking video has received much praise from viewers who had been waiting all year to see what the department store, which has become renowned for its Christmas adverts, had in store for 2018.
“What a fantastic advert. Takes the message of what a true gift means at Christmas. Get it right and it’s not the value but the love and memories you get. John Lewis congratulations on getting the importance of family,” one person wrote on Youtube.
“Love the sentiment behind this, true emotional connection, what Christmas is all about! A lovely tribute to Elton and his late mum,” another added.
While a third simply said: “It was beautiful, really emotional”.
For Elton it was a truly special advertisement to be involved with. Speaking to The Telegraph the musician said he was honoured to be a part of the campaign that brought back many warm memories for himself and his family.
“It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredibly journey I have been on, and how first playing my grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life,” he told the publication.
While John Lewis & Partners’ Craig Inglis said they hope the advertisement will bring a magical feeling to the holiday season.
“The ad tells the story of why Elton’s piano was more than just a gift and we hope to remind customers of that special moment when they’ve given a gift at Christmas time that they know will be treasured forever,” he told The Telegraph.
