Secrets to having more energy in your 60s

The last few months, a number of people have remarked that I seem to have a lot of energy for my age (70 in less than two years). Or they have asked me, “From where do you get all your energy?”

I have always been a high energy person. I don’t know if it’s in the genes, but I do believe that a lot of it has to do with one’s state of mind. There is a principal in life that in order to receive you need to give (the law of reciprocity). It applies whether we are talking about money, relationships or exercise.

I still feel that I have energy to burn, so here is the formula or regime that I follow. It may not work for you, or you may take a few pointers and use it in your life. So, here we go:

1. I sleep 5 to 6 hours a night

This statement may seem counterintuitive as we are told we need to sleep 8 hours a night. Who created that rule? I have not slept 8 hours a night since I was a teenager. We are all different. I know of people who only need 4 hours while some need 9.

2.  I eat 3 meals a day

Every day with a balance of the food groups. I do avoid spicy food and drink only a minimal amount of alcohol. My weight has not fluctuated more than 3 kilos in the last 50 years.

3.  Swimming

2 kilometres, three times a week.

4. Pilates and weight routine

A sequence of 4 different Pilates exercises using a tension band. A weight regime using 4 different exercises. I do each one 10 times with 4 repeats. On the fourth repetition, I continue until the muscles fatigue.

5. Cycling

Two times a week.

6. Meditate

10 minutes a day.

7. Gratitude

Each day I give thanks for what life has given me.
