When knitting goes horribly wrong: Grandma’s ‘inappropriate’ blanket

Here’s a story that’s bound to put a smile on your face this morning. It’s not uncommon for grandmas to knit blankets for the grandkids. In fact, you probably do it yourself or have a blanket or jumper that your own grandma knitted for you when you were younger.

For one grandma, however, she’s made an embarrassing blunder on her grandson’s blanket and it doesn’t look like the internet is going to forget it any time soon. The picture, which was originally uploaded to image-sharing website Imgur last year but is doing the rounds again on the internet, shows a small child looking unimpressed with his shark blanket.

While the impressive knitting skills are nothing to turn your nose up at, people across the internet quickly discovered that there was something a little off with the fin on the shark. Complete with a tale, teeth and frightening eyes, the grandmother wanted to ensure the shark looked like the real-deal. She decided to add a fin to the blanket. There’s nothing inappropriate about that, right?

Wrong! When placed over the little boy, people across the internet were quick to point out that the fin didn’t look like a fin at all, but rather something a little more R-rated. We’ll leave it up to you to decide what it actually looks like.

Needless to say, people online had a field day and the blanket quickly became a viral hit. One person left a comment saying: “He’ll be embarrassed about it for a minute, then it’ll become a conversational piece for the next ten years.” Another comment read: “Isn’t the fin facing backwards anyway? Seems fishy.” A third added: “Fin envy anybody?”

It’s not the only knitting story that has gone viral in recent times. The Penguin Foundation recently made headlines when they put a call out for avid knitters to knit tiny jumpers for injured penguins on their road to recovery. While many people swooned over how adorable the penguins looked in their jumpers, the charity warned that they were essential in bringing the penguins back to full health.

What do you think? Have you ever embarrassed yourself with a knitting disaster? What is your favourite thing to knit?
