All throughout the year, travel lovers from the Starts at 60 community get together to explore Australia and the broader world.

Travel at 60’s dedicated over-60s social getaways are more than just tours; they provide a genuine chance to make new friends. Whether you’re going solo, as a couple or with a group, everybody is warmly welcome to join the fun.

Among the most varied and interesting escapes on offer: our trip to Broken Hill and Outback New South Wales.

Today we’re thrilled to announce this popular over-60s social getaway is back for another year, with four departures lined up between the lovely cooler months of June-September.

Here are just a few of the many experiences you could soon enjoy with a great group of over-60 travellers…

Visit the famous Palace Hotel

First opened in 1889 as “Mario’s Palace”, this is easily one of Australia’s most striking and distinctive pubs. You’ll find beautiful renaissance-inspired artwork and painted landscapes in practically every direction – including the ceiling!

If you’re feeling lucky, you can also try your hand at a game of two-up. Broken Hill is the only place where you can legally play this game on a regular basis!

Spend a (surprisingly comfortable) night in an underground motel

These cosy “dugouts” (carved into the side of Poor Man’s Hill at White Cliffs) were originally part of a humble family home. As nearby hotel accommodation overflowed, the Hornby family offered more and more visitors the chance to sleep underground, to the point that it eventually became a full-fledged hotel.

The rooms here offer a unique escape: no TV, no phone coverage, and with bathrooms placed on the edge of the complex to maintain a tranquil atmosphere. No matter how harsh the outside temperature gets, it remains a pleasant 22-23 degrees here all year round.

See the desert sculptures light up at sunset

No tour of Broken Hill is complete without a peaceful stroll through the Living Desert Reserve.

At the centre of the reserve is a hill with 12 sandstone artworks. These now-iconic pieces were commissioned in 1993 from artists all around the world. Each tells a different story; each is designed to highlight the landscape and feel truly vivid and alive as the sun sets.

Explore the stunning Pro Hart Gallery

This one-of-a-kind gallery celebrates a truly remarkable Aussie artist and his many passions.

Not only will you see his famous depictions of outback life; you’ll get a great sense of who he truly was as a painter, collector, inventor, sculptor, performance artist and a human being.

Alongside a huge range of Pro’s own creations; you’ll also find hundreds of works by other artists — from local legends to international icons like Claude Monet.

Journey through Menindee & Kinchega National Park

The highlight of this natural escape is the wetlands cruise on the River Lady; a special chance to get up close and personal with the abundant local birds and wildlife.

You’ll also discover a whole new appreciation of both Ancient Indigenous history and the stories of more recent European settlers.

Tour “Australia’s liveliest ghost town”

Silverton has less than 50 residents, but it drives a great tourist trade, and has served as a filming location for many iconic Aussie films, from Priscilla to Mad Max 2.

Attractions include a Mad Max museum, a great range of charming local galleries, lovingly preserved historic sites from the town’s heyday, and of course, the local pub.
