A Melbourne woman who claims she suffered third-degree burns after her Sunbeam Crock-Pot multi-cooker “exploded” — spraying her and her family with boiling soup — is now calling for the item to be recalled.
The 35-year-old mother-of-two, who 7News identified only as “Sarah”, claims she had been making chicken and corn soup, but when the soup had finished cooking, the lid of the crock-pot wouldn’t open. She decided to let it rest for a minute before trying again.
“All I remember is the pressure-cooker lid flying off, and then I was just curled up on the ground screaming ‘Get my clothes off me,'” Sarah said. “It was a bomb. There’s no other way to describe it. It was a bomb going off.”
The explosion allegedly sprayed the boiling soup around the kitchen, with Sarah copping the majority of the burns, while her husband and four-year-old son also received minor splash burns.
In a harrowing emergency call that followed, Sarah’s husband described the chaos: “[The soup is] on me, it’s on my forearms, my stomach. My son has it on his head and a little bit on his face. My wife [has it] on her chest and her arms.”
After the alleged incident, which occurred two weeks ago, Sarah claims to have spent nine days in The Alfred Hospital’s Burns Clinic, where she underwent two surgeries. Footage shows shocking images of her skin peeling away from across her arms and her upper chest. Sarah claims she now requires daily dressing changes and has been left with permanent scars.
According to 7News, Sarah has engaged lawyers and is calling for the product to be immediately recalled. Manufacturer Sunbeam told 7News that safety was its “top priority”. “We take this matter very seriously,” the company said.
