Today, Australian music lovers and rock fans everywhere say farewell to one of the greats, Jim Keays of Masters Apprentices as he passes away at age 67.
He passed away at 10:30am this morning in Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after being admitted with pneumonia related to his multiple myeloma (a type of blood cancer).
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that guitarist Davey Lane who worked on an album in 2012 with Keays, was making a follow up with him this year. He told the Sydney Morning Herald, “As much as today hits you like a hammer, I’ll take away great memories of the time I spent with him. He finished doing what he started doing, making good rock ‘n’ roll.”
Jim Keays was more than just a lead vocalist. He was a multi-talented singer-songwriter, a guitarist and a harmonica player. His band, Masters Apprentices had a number of top 20 singles throughout the 60s and 70s including Think about Tomorrow Today, Living in a Child’s Dream, Turn Up Your Radio, Because I Love You and Undecided.
